When it comes to her children, Charlize Theron’s love is fast and furious.
But this isn’t to say motherhood doesn’t come without its challenges, as Charlize explained of her daughters Jackson, 11, and August, 9.
“Oh, my God, they're so embarrassed by me constantly,” she told E! News’ Francesca Amiker at her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) 2024 Block Party July 13. “They’re kids, they're girls, you know? I have a preteen and I feel like I have a nine year old who thinks she's a 13 year old. It’s a lot of girl in our house.”
The 48-year-old continued, “I'm just trying to keep my head above water, because they are smart and they are witty and they are firecrackers, but they do not go, ‘Oh my god, Mom, you're so amazing.’ They’re like, ‘Excuse me, I need. I want.’”
Because, as Charlize noted, they’re “normal kids,” quipping, “They’re a--holes, but they’re really nice. Other parents know what I’m talking about.” (For more with Charlize, tune into E! News tonight, July 15 at 11 p.m.)
The Mad Max Fury Road star also took a moment to reflect on the significance of the evening’s event—which over $1 million to benefit CTAOP’s work supporting the health and safety of youth in Southern Africa—and why the cause is so important to her.
“I think when you grow up in a beautiful country like South Africa that has some turmoil,” she explained, “there's always a feeling of you take care of each other. And for me, it was a no brainer. How could I go and work anywhere else? It's where I'm from. It's in my bones. They're my people.”
The outdoor event also celebrated the release of Twisters, which means among the many celebrity guests were the film’s leads Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
But while Jackson and August weren’t with their mom at the event, both girls have enjoyed star-studded nights of their own with the Academy Award winner.
In April, Charlize brought August as her plus one to Dior's pre-fall fashion show at the Brooklyn Museum and in September, Jackson and her mom attended to Dior's "Ready To Wear Spring 2024" show in Paris. At both events, the girls were treated to front row experiences.
Though the Monster star largely keeps her life with her daughters ouf of the spotlight, she does give the occasional peek on social media into their life at home.
Most recently, Charlize detailed a trip to the Big Apple with August. She captioned the April post, which featured a sweet carousel of the mother-daughter duo around the city, “We came, we saw, we did it all. NYC you were a treat!”
